This weekend was so (so so so) much fun. Friday night was the semi which was fun and then Saturday, I got up at 7 (only got 7 hours of sleep Friday night, but whatever) and got ready for the backpacking trip. There ended up only being six of us, me, Pam, Mike and Calman (no idea how to spell his name actually, but close enough) and then Bob and his wife. And it was so much fun (how many times do you think I can repeat that in this? so much fun, so much fun, so much fun...). We went to where we'll be in January and set up camp where the adults and Survival 2 students will be camping for four days while the rest of us Survival 1 students do our four day solos.

And then Bob showed us some of the sites he would be giving to us then. There was so much wood all over the place and they were all really pretty and peaceful. And then we split up into partners and built shelters near base camp, although Pam and I were given the tree-filled and wet portion and spent half an hour trying to find any dry and flat area to start building, which meant we didn't have enough time to finish. But we did manage to see a hunter with a bow and arrow (who obviously shot me and hit my finger causing the cut on my finger, at least according to Pam). And then we practiced making fires, which I failed at because the white birch bark wouldn't light for me, because I didn't have enough or something. Pam got a nice fire going, though. By the time we finished that, it was getting dark, so we set up the tents and then made a large fire right in the middle of the path. We gathered huge piles of wood and kept the fire going until we went to sleep.

And then we sat around the fire and talked, and played hide and seek and other games in the dark and it was a lot of fun. Bob told minute mysteries (you know where someone describes a situation and everyone has to figure out what happened by asking yes or no questions) and although I already knew all of them, it was fun watching everyone try to figure them out, especially when they were thinking about them in completely the wrong way. And we ate dinner. So all of us had normal food, Ramen, sandwiches, etc, except Calman who had Army MRE's, which it just so happens we were talking about in Chemistry the other day. I don't remember when, but at some point after dark, we heard wolves howling.

Eventually, at around 10, we were tired enough that we all went to bed. Pam and I shared a tent, Calman slept in the shelter he and Mike built, and Mike slept in his own tent. I woke up at like 6 this morning to the sound of geese and then slept on and off until I heard Pam start moving around at 8:30 or 9. And then we got up and ate breakfast. Mike, Pam and I all had bagels, Calman had bacon and eggs, but then we also made tea out of white pine needles, which was actually pretty good, and Bob gave us some oatmeal. We broke camp, scattered the ashes of the fire and then went to explore some of the other survival sites. And then we hiked back to the parking lot and drove home. The whole trip was just amazing and I have double survival tomorrow, where it just happens Pam, Mike and I are in the middle of building our group shelter at Menotomy Rocks.
